What sixty aquaponics builds taught us

The classic IBC aquaponics build is one container cut lengthways as a grow bed above an intact container as the fish tank. We have made about sixty of them and improved the design roughly six times.


The standard build

One 275 gallon container provides both halves. The top third is cut off and inverted to become a media grow bed; the remaining two-thirds stays as the fish tank and sump. The cage is cut down and re-welded into a frame that carries the grow bed above the tank. A pump lifts water to the bed, and a bell siphon drains it back on a flood-and-drain cycle.

It costs us somewhere between $640 and $1,100 depending on media, pump and whether the customer wants the frame powder-coated. It is the single most enjoyable thing that comes out of the fabrication bay and it is also the one that generates the most follow-up questions.

Grade selection, which is not optional

This is the most common friction in these projects. Somebody has found a $50 container and wants us to build on it. The honest answer is that the $50 container is fine for the frame, fine for a rain barrel, and not fine for the tank. We will build a system where the frame is reclaimed and the water-contact vessel is A grade or a fresh bottle, and that compromise satisfies almost everyone.

The bell siphon, and why half of them fail

A bell siphon drains the grow bed automatically once the water reaches a set level, then breaks the siphon and lets it refill. It has no moving parts and no electronics, which is why everybody wants one, and it is dimensionally fussy, which is why half of the home-built ones do not cycle reliably.

  • The standpipe-to-bell diameter ratio matters. Too close and it will not prime; too far apart and it will not break. We use a 1-inch standpipe inside a 3-inch bell as a starting point on a bed this size.
  • The bell needs a snorkel — a small vertical slot or tube near the top — or it will not break the siphon cleanly and you get a permanent trickle instead of a cycle.
  • Inflow rate has to sit inside a window. Too slow and the siphon never primes; too fast and it never breaks. On a 275-derived bed, roughly 1.5 to 3 gallons per minute is the working range.
  • The media guard around the bell must not restrict flow. This is the most common home-build error — gravel packs against the bell and the whole thing stops.
  • Level matters. A grow bed that is out of level by half an inch across its length will pool at one end and dry at the other.

We test every siphon through at least ten complete cycles before a system leaves, with the actual media in place, because a siphon that works empty frequently does not work loaded.

Heat, which is the Texas-specific problem

Most aquaponics literature is written for temperate climates and quietly assumes you are trying to keep the water warm. Here the problem is the opposite, and it is severe. An uninsulated 180-gallon tank in full Austin sun will reach 90 °F by mid-afternoon in July. Dissolved oxygen falls as temperature rises, fish metabolic demand rises at the same time, and the two curves cross somewhere that kills tilapia.

  1. Shade the tank completely. Not partially. A shade structure over the whole assembly is the single highest-value addition and it doubles as algae control.
  2. Insulate the tank walls. We wrap with reflective foil-faced insulation inside a cut-down cage. It is ugly and it buys four or five degrees.
  3. Put the tank in ground contact if you can. Even sitting on soil rather than on a slab is worth a couple of degrees.
  4. Oversize the aeration. Whatever the calculator says, add fifty percent for summer.
  5. Choose species for the climate. Tilapia tolerate warmth better than trout, and channel catfish better still.
  6. Run the pump at night as well as during the day. Circulation is thermal management as much as it is filtration.

Every one of those changes came from something going wrong on somebody's system. If you have one of ours from before 2022, the shade and insulation retrofit is the one worth doing, and we will supply the parts at cost.
