275 gallon
IBC totes

If somebody says "a tote" without qualifying it, they mean this one. The 275 is the global default: one cubic metre of liquid on a standard 48 × 40 pallet footprint, and roughly seven out of every ten containers that come through our gate.

The short answer

A 275 gallon IBC tote holds 1,041 litres, measures 48" × 40" × 46" high, weighs about 127 lb empty and about 2,420 lb full of water. It sits on a standard GMA pallet footprint, stacks two high filled and three high empty, and carries a 2" outlet valve with a 6" fill lid.

  • 1,000 L nominal — the metric size the rest of the world designs around
  • 48" × 40" footprint fits any standard pallet position and rack bay
  • 127 lb tare, 2,420 lb gross on water; add for product density
  • 26 per 53-foot van single-stacked, 52 double-stacked empty

Note the top row carefully. Twenty-six filled water totes exceed the legal gross weight of a standard van, which is why filled loads are usually 18 to 20 units. Empty totes cube out long before they weigh out, so empties are almost always a volume problem and full ones are almost always a weight problem.

Where the 275 is the wrong choice

  • When you have the same footprint but taller headroom available. A 330 gives 20 % more volume for 7 inches. If the space exists, take it.
  • When you decant under 40 gallons at a time and have no forklift. Drums win on handling.
  • When your product is dense. At specific gravity 1.6 you are at 3,800 lb gross, and a lot of racking is not rated for that in a single position.
  • When it will live outdoors uncovered for years. UV will get it. Specify a black bottle or build a shade.

?Common questions

Questions people actually ask

How much does a 275 gallon tote weigh full?

About 2,420 lb with water — 2,293 lb of water plus roughly 127 lb of container. For any other product multiply 2,293 by the specific gravity and add the tare. A tote of 1.2 SG product is about 2,880 lb.

Will a 275 gallon tote fit through a standard door?

No. At 48 inches wide and 46 inches tall it will not pass a 36-inch doorway. Roll-up doors and dock openings only, and remember the forklift needs to fit too.

How many 275 totes fit on a truck?

26 single-stacked or 52 double-stacked on a 53-foot van, by volume. If they are filled with water you will hit legal weight limits at around 18 to 20 units, so filled loads are always lighter than the trailer could physically hold.

Is a 275 gallon tote the same as a 1,000 litre IBC?

Yes, practically. 275 US gallons is 1,041 litres, and manufacturers design to 1,000 L nominal. The two names describe the same container on two measurement systems.
